Finger Lakes, New York State

By Today's Bride on June, 23 2009
Play in a land of long slender lakes, sparkling waterfalls, rocky gorges, and breathtaking vistas. Native American legend says the Creator looked upon this land with special favour and reached down to bless it, leaving the imprint of His hand, hence, the Finger Lakes.

What to do

In Fayetteville, you might golf while visiting Green Lakes State Park. In Elmira, visit the Soaring Center and learn how to soar through the sailplane simulator. Just outside of Ithaca, don’t miss Taughannock Falls, the highest free-falling waterfall in the northeast. And definitely make time to visit and take part in the wine-tasting at the many wineries.

What to do

Dine aboard one of the cruise boats on the larger Finger Lakes. With 11 lakes, there’s plenty of lakeside dining with great views that add to the ambience. The area is renowned for high-quality wines – there are 100 wineries. Menus range from lighter nouveau to down-home hearty recipes.

Accommodations

There are luxury hotels, budget motels, B&Bs, vacation rentals, stately old inns, log cabins or campgrounds. Finger Lakes has them all. Experienced travellers like the B&Bs to get the real flavour of the area.
